Judo at Nakama
Nakama gym is giving Judo just a little extra and that’s what makes our Judo special. At Nakama, we learn our children to recognize and indicate boundaries. To be able to do that, we learn the judokas what respect is and when to say ‘stop’.

We can see that because of our Judo classes our judokas become more resilient, learn how to work together in a better way and learn skills they can use right now and when they are older.

The judo training and lessons

The judo training begins with greeting eachother, which actually means saying ‘good day’. After that, the warming up, which is the most important part of the exercise, will warm your muscles to prevent you from getting any injuries. During the warming up we have several exercises, for example: fall exercises, a forward roll that teaches you how to fall.

After that, we practice throwing and strangleholds. Clamps and chokeholds will only be practiced when you have an orange belt. After practicing the techniques it is time for randori or yaku soko geiko. Randori acutally means fighting with eachther and yaku soko geiko is more about quickly practicing how to throw. Yaku soko geiko ne waza is the practicing of strangleholds, chokeholds and clamps.

To make the training a bit more fun, we have the judo ball. It does not look like a ball, but that’s how we call it. We use the judobal especially in falling exercises. I will show you right now. Now you’ve seen how we use the ball.

What is judo and what does it mean?

Judo is a defense and a self-control sport. You learn how to fall in the right way and you need to focus. You must be able to concentrate well in the practice of throwing and grips and also when you are more experienced with kata’s. Kata means falling in style, but you also need to do a lot of moves.

Because judo means ‘the soft way’, it is also meant to be like that. So the throws you make are not made to hurt a lot. Of course you learn how to fall, and you can feel it when you hit the ground.

The history of Judo

Around 1880, Jigoro Kano was looking for the best self-defense method. He studied various existing combat sports, including the ju jutsu (= self defense). Every school had its own methods. Kano discovered that most methods were too focused on completely eliminating the opponent.

Eventually he came to his own system that he called Judo, which means ‘the soft way’. He chose this name to make a clear distinction with the hard ju jutsu. The main goal of his judo was to work together on a harmonious development of mind and body. In 1882 he founded the Kodokan Judo Institute in Tokyo, which is still the standard in Japan.

After the Second World War, the sport judo became more popular due to the fact that this combat sport was very suitable for the army and the police. Perhaps this happened at the expense of mental education. Classical Judo – practiced in the appropriate temple or place (= the Dojo) – was presented to the public with both technical and ceremonial restrictions.
